AI Named Word Of The Year By Collins Dictionary

The abbreviation of artificial intelligence (AI) has been named the Collins Word of the Year for 2023, the dictionary publisher said on Tuesday. Lexicographers at Collins Dictionary said use of the term had "accelerated" and that it had become the dominant conversation of 2023. "We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology," Collins managing director Alex Beecroft said. Collins said its wordsmiths analysed the Collins Corpus, a database that contains more than 20 billion words with written material from websites, newspapers, magazines and books published around the world. It also draws on spoken material from radio, TV and everyday conversations, while new data is fed into the Corpus every month, to help the Collins dictionary editors identify new words and meanings from the moment they are fi

Jailed Iran Activist Smuggles Out Letter Of Thanks For Nobel Peace Prize

Jailed Iranian women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi has smuggled out a letter of thanks for her Nobel Peace Prize awarded earlier this month, saying it marked a turning point in "empowering protest and social movements worldwide". The imprisoned women's rights advocate won the 2023 peace prize on Oct. 6 in a rebuke to Tehran's theocratic leaders and boost for anti-government protesters, while also drawing the Islamic Republic's swift condemnation. Mohammadi is serving multiple sentences in Tehran's Evin Prison amounting to about 12 years imprisonment, one of the many periods she has been detained behind bars, according to the Front Line Defenders rights organisation. Charges include spreading propaganda against the state. In the letter smuggled out of prison and read by her daughter Kiana in a video posted on the Nobel website, Mohammadi said the news of her Nobel prize had been met with cries from her cellmates of "Woman, Life, Freedom",

After allegedly killing her 15-year-old daughter with an axe and dumping her body in a well with the help of other family members, Shivpati lodged a complaint at the Manjhanpur police station here saying her daughter had been kidnapped, SP Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said. Shivpati reported to the police on October 14 that her daughter who had gone to the fields for some work on October 2 had not returned home since then. Based on her complaint, a case of abduction was registered against unknown persons and a probe was launched, the SP said. On October 26, villagers informed the police that they had spotted the body of a girl in a well in a field outside Tejvapur village. Watch: Couple Recreates 'Bang Bang' Song, Hrithik Roshan Reacts

A couple decided to give their pre-wedding shoot a Bollywood twist. In a video now going viral on the internet, the couple, Karan and Sakshi Kashyap recreated the song ' Bang Bang ', originally picturised on actors Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. With choreographed moves that mirrored the song's infectious energy, the couple weaved their playful chemistry into each step and beat. The clip shows a couple dressed like Mr Roshan and Ms Kaif, recreating the popular Bollywood song in a scene-by-scene manner. "In her [Sakshi] own words, 'Karan, I know we aren't that great dancers but I wish we could do something like this instead of a PreWed video for our wedding'. That enthusiasm of Sakshi had left a thought in Karan's mind. He had made up his mind that one day he would surprise her with KARSHI's version of BANG BANG," the wedding planners wrote. "Cut to 2 years later - Their wedding preps have already started. One day while bringing her ba

Bharat Army Comes Up With Stunning Replies After Barmy Army Trolls Kohli

The battle between fans is quite common during the Cricket World Cup 2023 and it was in full display during the high-profile match between India and England in Lucknow on Sunday. It was a rare off day for Virat Kohli as he was dismissed for a duck and England's official fan army - Barmy Army - took to social media to taunt the veteran batter. While India were able to post a modest total, the bowlers were in full form and the duo of Joe Root and Ben Stokes also lost their wickets without scoring a single run. India's fan army - Bharat Army - wasted no time in coming up with hilarious replies to the earlier taunts. Earlier, England bowlers led by David Willey kept India down to 229-9 despite skipper Rohit Sharma 's 87 in a must-win Cricket World Cup 2023 match for the defending champions on Sunday. "Big Victims": S Jaishankar On India's Strong Position On Terrorism

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India takes a strong position on terrorism because "we are big victims of terrorism." Mr Jaishankar's remarks came at a time when there is an ongoing war between Israel and Hamas and New Delhi abstained from a UN resolution that did not condemn Hamas terror attacks. He also stressed the need to take a "consistent position" on terrorism. "Today, a good government and strong governance stand up for its people. Just as good governance is necessary at home, right judgements are necessary abroad. We take a strong position on terrorism because we are big victims of terrorism. We will have no credibility if we say that when terrorism impacts us, it's very serious; when it happens to somebody else, it's not serious. We need to have a consistent position," Mr Jaishankar said while speaking at a Town hall in Bhopal yesterday. India abstained from voting on the Jordanian resolution which called for an &q

US Mass Shooter Was "Hearing Voices, Suffering From Paranoia": Police

Police in Maine said Saturday that the man who gunned down 18 people at a bar and a bowling alley and later committed suicide, suffered serious mental health issues, but was able to buy weapons legally because he had never been forcibly committed to treatment. The body of Robert Card, a 40-year-old army reservist, was discovered Friday night inside a tractor trailer near a recycling center where he used to work, said Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck. Card had shot himself. Investigators are still struggling to determine Card's motive for carrying out Wednesday's massacre in the town of Lewiston. However, Mike Sauschuck said that Card had reportedly been hearing voices and suffering from paranoia. "Clearly there's a mental health component to this," Mr Sauschuck told reporters. Investigators found a "paper-style" note that Card had left to a loved one which contained a password to his phone and bank account information, Mr Sauschuck sa

Watch: Pakistan's Comedy Of Errors In Fielding As Wayward Throw Hits Nawaz

Pakistan cricket team's fielding has been criticised heavily during the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2023 and they once again suffered a comedy of errors during the match against South Africa on Friday. Temba Bavuma played the ball softly towards mid-on and went for a quick single. The fielder Agha Salman collected the ball but Mohammad Rizwan's call for him to throw it resulted in a wayward throw towards the bowler's end. The throw was far away from the stumps and it ended up hitting the bowler Mohammad Nawaz who looked in pain as the commentators were left in splits following the incident. Left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi grabbed four wickets as South Africa bowled out Pakistan for 270. The 33-year-old finished with figures of 4-60 while paceman Marco Jansen took 3-43 after Pakistan won the toss and batted, looking for a win to revive their World Cup hopes. Pakistan have lost three of their five matches while South Africa have four wins and one loss. Middle-order batt

On PM Modi's Jibe At Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule's Padma Vibhushan Rebuttal

Nationalist Congress Party leader Supriya Sule on Friday said it was the Narendra Modi government that had given Sharad Pawar the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award, for his work in the agriculture sector, the statement coming a day after the prime minister questioned the NCP founder's contribution to farmers. During his address in Shirdi in Ahmednagar district on Thursday, PM Modi, without naming Mr Pawar, had said, "Some people in Maharashtra only did politics in the name of farmers. A senior leader of Maharashtra served as the country's agriculture minister. I personally respect him, but what has he done for farmers?" Mr Pawar served as the agriculture minister when the Congress-led UPA government was in office at the Centre (2004-14). PM Modi had also said when Mr Pawar was the Union agriculture minister, farmers were at the mercy of middlemen. Talking to reporters in Sindhdurg district, Ms Sule said whenever the prime minister came

Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Dies At 68

Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 68, state media reported Friday. A reform-minded bureaucrat, Li was once tipped as the country's future leader only to be eclipsed by President Xi Jinping, under whom he served as premier for 10 years. Xinhua news agency said Li had a sudden heart attack on Thursday and passed away in the early hours of Friday in Shanghai, where he had been resting.   During his time as premier, Li cultivated an image as a more modern apparatchik compared to his stiffer colleagues. A career bureaucrat who spoke fluent English, he had voiced support for economic reforms during his time in office. He showed liberal tendencies in his youth, but toed the party line for decades, and his reputation was damaged by his handling of an HIV/AIDS epidemic stemming from a tainted blood donation programme while he was party boss in Henan province. Local authorities responded with a clampdown on activists and the media ra

12 Students Branded With Hot Spoon As Punishment In Gujarat School: Cops

The administrator of an unregistered residential school in Gujarat's Sabarkantha district was booked on Thursday for allegedly branding at least 12 minor students with a hot steel spoon as punishment for not waking up early in the morning, police said. The case of assault and other offences under the Indian Penal Code and Juvenile Justice Act against Nachiketa Vidya Sansthan administrator Ranjit Solanki at Kheroj police station was filed based on the complaint of the father of a 10-year-old student, an official said. "It is alleged that Solanki had branded the complainant's son and 11 other students with a hot steel spoon nearly two months ago. He is yet to be arrested," Deputy Superintendent of Police Smit Gohil said. Mr Solanki, a resident of Poshina taluka of the district, is the administrator of 'Nachiketa Vidhya Sansthan' in Kheroj village in Khedbrahma taluka. A parallel investigation by the office of the district primary education officer revealed i

Israel Finds Itself Increasingly Alone As Anger Grows Over Gaza

Jordan's Queen Rania Al Abdullah was offered a chance to express horror at the Oct. 7 Hamas killing and abduction of Israelis. How did she feel, she was asked in a CNN interview, "as an Arab, as a Palestinian, a human being, a mother?" The monarch launched into an impassioned denunciation of Israel's subsequent bombing of Gaza and the West's "double standard," juxtaposing what happened in southern Israel with what is occurring in Gaza. "Are we being told it is wrong to kill an entire family at gunpoint but it's OK to shell them to death?" The interview, greeted with fury in Israel, is part of a growing disconnect between how the Jewish state views the conflict, and how it is seen by the rest of the Middle East and many further afield. Inside Israel, a powerful sense of foreboding was evidenced by a new poll showing 64% of Israelis now fear for their physical safety. Hamas continues to fire rockets and missiles into the country every day

Watch: Kohli-Rohit Bromance In Spotlight As India Ends 20-Year-old WC Jinx

Till Sunday, two teams were unbeaten at the Cricket World Cup 2023 - the Rohit Sharma -led Indian cricket team and the New Zealand cricket team. So, their clash at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala was sort of a decider as to which team was the best after the first few round of matches at the Cricket World Cup 2023. To add intrigue to the contest, the Indian cricket team had not been able to win against New Zealand in a Cricket World Cup match since 2003.  However, that record changed as India beat New Zealand by four wickets.  Virat Kohli (95) led India's chase against a good New Zealand bowling attack as the host side kept its all-win record intact at the Cricket World Cup. After India's win, the bromance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli took the spotlight, the video of which was shared by the ICC on its instagram handle.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) In another video that has gone viral in social media,

Iran "Actively Facilitating" Attacks On Bases In Middle East, Says US

The White House accused Iran Monday of "actively facilitating" attacks on US bases in the Middle East, as it expressed concern over the potential for escalation of the war between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza. "Iran continues to support Hamas and Hezbollah, and we know that Iran is closely monitoring these events and in some cases, actively facilitating these attacks and spurring on others who may want to exploit the conflict for their own good or for that of Iran," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at the White House. "We know Iran's goal is to maintain some level of deniability here, but we're not going to allow them to do that," John Kirby added. Is Congress' Opposition To Adani A Form Of Extortion, Asks BJP MP

Alleging that Congress MLAs in his constituency are taking money from, and promoting, Adani Group companies, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Saturday wondered whether the party's opposition to the group was a form of extortion or a pressure tactic.  In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Dubey posted photos of plaques in Hindi from various projects which state that they had been carried out courtesy Adani Power and on the recommendation of Deepika Pandey Singh, the Congress MLA from Mahagama in Jharkhand. Mr Dubey is the Lok Sabha MP from Jharkhand's Godda.  Mr Dubey also took the name of Congress MLA Pradeep Yadav from the Poraiyahat constituency stating that he does the same thing. Both the Mahagama and Poraiyahat assembly constituencies come under the Godda Lok Sabha seat. In a Hindi post, addressed to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Mr Dubey said, "Rahul Gandhi ji , could it be that the Congress' opposition to Adani is a form of extortion or a pressure tactic? A spokesman for Meta confirmed to AFP that it would not take part in this year's event. "We will no longer have a presence at Web Summit," a Google spokesperson said. Irish entrepreneur Paddy Cosgrave, co-founder of the Web Summit, wrote on social media platform X last week that he was "shocked at the rhetoric and actions of so many Western leaders & governments." "War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are," Cosgrave wrote on October 13. Hamas militants stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, and killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians who were shot, mutilated or burnt to death on the first day of the raid, according to Israeli officials. Meta Sorry For Adding "Terrorist" To Some Palestinian Instagram Profiles

Meta has apologised for inserting the word "terrorist" into some Palestinian users' profile bio. According to The Guardian , the issue affected users with the word "Palestinian" written in English on their profile along with the Palestinian flag emoji and the Arabic phrase "alhamdulillah" - which translates to "Praise be to God" in English. However, upon clicking "see translation," viewers were given an English translation reading: "Praise be to God, Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom". This issue was brought to attention by Tikok user ytkingkhan, who tested the phrase on his Instagram account.  Now, after the TikTok user's video went viral online, Meta issued an apology for adding "terrorist" to the bios of some Palestinian Instagram users. Truth Will Prevail, Say Mahua Moitra's Detractors After Explosive Affidavit

Businessman Darshan Hiranandani's explosive affidavit on his links with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and claims on her efforts to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi by using the Adani Group, has brought cheer to her detractors. Most of them hailed the affidavit as a victory for truth. Others named as Mahua Moitra's allies, like journalist Sucheta Dalal, called the affidavit a "farce". In his affidavit, Darshan Hiranandani claimed Mahua Moitra had given him her parliament login ID to frame questions on the Adani group, which she felt was the "only way" to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi.   He also claimed that Ms Moitra received support from others in this effort, including journalists, Opposition leaders and former Adani Group employees, who fed her unverified information. In this context, he named Sucheta Dalal and a few others. The BJP's Nishikant Dubey, who had sought Mahua Moitra's suspension from parliament in a letter to Lok Sabh
